Plinth - Tenzuke Chiste EP

My, what a strange record. Plinth like to experiment; simple as.

In some cases, the band's love of experimentation overshadows the songwriting on this EP but that doesn't mean these songs aren't frightfully impressive.

Originality wise the band get full marks. No other band in Ireland sounds like Plinth and for that they should be saluted. It's a 4 track EP with so many twists and turns that at times it feels like you're witnessing an epic rock opera in your very own bedroom. This band will surprise you, there's no doubt about that.

Let's see what you think:

As the band say themselves, don't ask about the song names.

The Pulpit EP

It's sexy garage punk from Dublin; and it's fucking good!

Seductive vocals and songs that take you back in time to a better age in music, The Pulpit know exactly what they're doing. This is a remarkable debut EP from a band that I knew nothing about.

Said EP contains three tracks, with so much going on in each that it's hard to keep up. Opener 'Political Correctness Gone Mad' takes a steamy number-two on aspiring indie bands across the country, yet it sounds like the band can play it with their eyes closed. 'Love Is Denied' is a stunner that reminds me of The Cardigans while closing track 'Paula' is surf rock at the sexiest level.

This band needs more attention. Let's give it to them.

All three tracks off the EP are currently streaming on the band's myspace. The CD is available at their gigs and on their online store.

'Lost the sanity inside in her head. Lost her innocence in someone's bed'

Lyric of the week: Week 2

'Lost the sanity inside in her head. Lost her innocence in someone's bed'

Taken from the Dirty 9's new single 'Lucy Opus' (released last Friday), such words serve to harden this tragic tale of a girl with a cold heart. Honest, bitter lyrics, along with the melodic music and unique vocals make this new single a massive hit.

Kudos to The Dirty 9's.

Our Own Releases: Past and Future

BriBry - Swings

This EP was released via ITunes in October this year. BriBry's debut single 'A Poem I'll Sing Out Loud' is now set for physical release at the end of November.

BriBry is Brian O'Reilly with the help of polite, friendly musician friends. Brian has been touring across Ireland (and now The UK) over the last year, giving free biscuits to his audience at each and every show. Biscuits and music make a fine mix we hear.

'Blending Plain White Tees effortless acoustic with more than a taste of Beach Boys happy-go-lucky cooing, Mira and A Poem I'll Sing Out Loud deign to hypnotise the hordes of teenage girls he will surely soon conquer' - Totally Dublin Magazine

'He's a swinging acoustic troubadour, swaying a little like Bright Eyes. This is the impression that you get from lead track Mira at least. One Thing To Do Before You Die is a haunting thing, very little backing whatsoever to start with, before some guitar slides gently in. It sounds dead sad, especially with Brian's soft, emotional, vocal styling. Black Magic shakes out the demons in a mannered freak out and finally A Poem I'll Sing Out Loud is a delightfully delicate ditty to conclude the EP, like a musical box bard.' Russell's Reviews UK

'Mighty. If he keeps doing what he's doing nothing will stand in the way of this guy.' Dublin City FM

From A Basement 2010 Releases

My Red Sea's debut EP. Digital release (ITunes) and physical release in Dublin.

Serious Q's and Silly Q's #1 - Blue Syndrome

I sat down recently with the vibrant and chatty Colm from Blue Syndrome for the first session of 'Serious Q's and Silly Q's'.

Hi Colm. Right so you've just released the debut album. Ok, be honest. How are you guys doing money wise at this exact moment? Spaghetti dinners/using notes for toilet paper?

Haha! As much as I'd love to use notes as toilet paper, I reckon it really hurts! Maybe the really old crumply fiver's would be nice though!
It's actually hard to tell how we're doing to be honest. We have so much support from our parents be it in the form of money or helping to promote and shift the cd's. We do owe a fair amount but I think we're just starting to earn a bit for ourselves now!

Blue Syndrome are quite tour crazy at the moment. Is this a full time operation for all of you? No college/jobs etc?

I'd like to think it is. I mean we do have other commitments. Dan's in one of his busiest years in college. Ste's doing the leaving. But for Tom and I, despite looking for jobs and trying to earn money this is a full time thing. I wake up everyday and dive straight into working for this band, emailing/calling people looking for gigs etc. It's always the last thing I do before I sleep as well.

That's great to hear. In relation to Ste and Dan though, what happens when they both finish their education? Are they as committed to the full time regime as you and Tom are?

I think at the minute it's a bit hard for someone like Dan to come into the band, after the original band being together for five years, and think of it as his sole career. We don't make money from it most of the time so why would he. But we all realise we have something good going on here and it's something we will do for a long time.
As for Ste, he's always wanted to do something weird, from being a marine biologist to believing he can be a rock star. But that's exactly what he is to us! He certainly has the jeans for it anyway.

So, brothers in a band? (Colm and Stephen). Is that easy or tough?

Absolutely savage! We have guitars lying around the house and we just pick them up and jam together whenever we want. Of course we can fight over the most stupid things but we still get on, it's just that cool brother thing. I think people can see our relationship on stage. He really supports me! The younger brother supporting the older brother, how weird is that.
I think he's an amazing musician, it's just a pity about the music he listens to, or the actual fact that you're never too sure what you're gonna hear when you walk into the kitchen every day!

Ask any band and they'll tell you that they're getting out of Ireland and touring abroad. But are Blue Syndrome actually States bound?

In the last week I've seen that there's so much more to Ireland than Dublin, Galway, Cork and Belfast. Sometimes the smaller places are better.

Regarding the USA thing, we've talked about it and right now it's just an idea. I think if we are going to do it it's going to be a last minute thing or else it'll be left until next year!! I think it'd be a lot of fun. We're not going over there to try break into anything, it's more just for the experience! Like we have this vision of buying a van and it breaking down after the first day, so we walk the rest of the way!! That'd be interesting to say the least!

A great debut album... Now what?

Just get it out there! We've been holding on to it for over a year now, we're so relieved to have it out and have people listening to it. We've started writing the next album, possibly even the one after. We've a couple of things lined up in the form of videos and publicity which hopefully will help us out.

Myself and Ste, Ste being the marketing genius, me being the instigator, with this Awkward Turtle Records thing are constantly thinking of new ways to promote the band and the Irish music scene. The scene needs attention and it needs a kick in the arse so we're just trying to draw attention to our gigs and eventually other bands gigs, be it in the form of 'Pay What You Like' shows and this one that we have in December with the Strings and things!

I'm looking forward to seeing what we come up with. The only plan that we have is to go forward, how we get there is constantly changing but when we think of something cool we roll with it and see what people think. It's worked so far but there's still so much more to do, so many more people to get to..

I'd also maybe in the new year try and get a lot more radioplay on the major stations! So we've got some plans for releases and what not so fingers crossed there.

Ok you chatty man. Now time for some short questions:

Fill in the blanks please Colm:

Colm is the GINGER one
Ste is the baby one
Tom is the sporty one
Dan is the SCARY one

We're quite like The Spice Girls! Haha

What's the best thing to happen in Blue Syndrome land so far?

Either playing to 1,500 people in Vicar Street or doing the album launch in The Village.

And the worst thing?

We were scammed out of money by a studio in Dublin who gave us shit recordings, promised us a lot of things, took our money and never really did anything with it! Great learning experience though.

What's the funniest moment in Blue Syndrome history?

There's too many... I think alot of them involve Ste and Tom's intimate relationship. We played a gig in Sligo and were given a room each but Tom and Ste decided to share a room. I recall Ste telling me about the large spoon he got with his soup that night!

Finally, although I admit it has stuck in our heads at last, explain the meaning behind the dreadful band name.

Ste and I wrote a song called 'Blue Syndrome' and when we were looking for a new name for the band it was something that just kept creeping back to us!

I think it was kind of written about being an alcoholic, even though at the time none of us even knew what alcohol was! It's that old!

Blue Syndrome itself refers to that downer buzz you feel during winter, it's also a condition some babies are born with..for us its just a rockin name!! colours are always good!

Blue Syndrome's debut album 'Over and Out' is out now digitally and in record stores around Ireland.

Happy Birthday Tower Records

To celebrate Tower's 16th birthday, a little gig was put on. Over 5 hours long, this little gig.

Award for best band of the day goes to....Heathers:
I had prepared myself for disappointment. Why I do not know. Perhaps it was because I had failed to believe the hype of these two. How could one guitar and two girls cause such a stir? See them live and you'll understand. Absolutely stunning harmonies, clever lyrics, and a charming stage presence makes Heathers what they are. They blew my smelly socks right off.

Other highlights:

Heritage Centre: 'We're a bit louder than Heathers'. With a set dominated by songs from their forthcoming release, Heritage Centre were damn impressive. A band so full of ideas that song 'Stars' (which received airplay on Phantom FM all the way back in 2006) has now been re-written for the third time. This new version of the song closed their set and was a major highlight.

Talulah Does The Hula: Electro pop that will make you smile. Seriously.

A wonderful day and a great way to celebrate the birthday of our finest record store. Tower's Instore gigs really are something special.

We Are Contenders - 'Memories'

This 3 track EP by Dublin singer/songwriter Jason Branagan has the power to hypnotize you, even if melodramatic pop songs aren't your thing.

Memories is a wonderful acoustic record that will break your heart if you're not careful. The lyrics and vocals (by both Jason and sister Jen) are delicate yet they demand attention. Maybe I'm just too sensitive but a good listen of this EP should put you in a very strange mood. I'm going to hug the next person that I see...

Lyrical highlight: 'An awkward silence fills the room, and I'm wondering does this ever end?' - track 2: Conversations

Jason has been touring with household names in Irish pop-punk such as The Shower Scene and Jody Has A Hitlist.

Maturing can have its' pro's and con's

Delorentos - You can make sound.

This album has been dividing opinions. Which is by no means a bad thing. Delorentos have been brave with this second record and their courage should be saluted. But something is still missing here...

In terms of it being a catchy pop record, it's nothing like the first album. In Love With Detail was a pop masterpiece. But if they wrote a record just like the first we'd all be complaining wouldn't we?

Openers Sanctuary and Secret give you an impression that this is exactly what's going to happen. These are songs that you could easily find on In Love With Detail, but they're so good that you don't care. Then Track 3, Hallucinations, hits your ears and sounds like nothing like they've done before. And I find myself hating that song.

The rest of the album is inconsistent in quality. But there are absolute gems which show how bloody good this band is. 'Leave Me Alone', a slow song about heartbreak, is one of the stand out tracks without a doubt.

But the true highlight for me was hearing the lead vocals of bassist Nial for the first time. 'Let The Light Go Out' is the best thing I have ever heard Delorentos do. Simple as... It's a track that saves this record in my eyes. It saves it from being a MASSIVE disappointment.

They got away with it anyhow. And all in all, it's a good album.

Lyrical highlight: 'Leave your feelings where they're thrown. Go and make yourself at home. Let the light go out'

'Love is like luck except it's trickier to find'

LYRIC OF THE WEEK : From A Basement Week 1

If there's any other music lovers out there who easily fall victim to heartfelt one-liners, surely this one is right down your alley.

Found in Verse 2 of 'Stolen It Twice', the lead track off Heritage Centre's new EP...it's a lyric that gets me every time I listen. Cracking song too.

Heritage Centre have been kidnapped by MCD and will be playing their most important headlines to date this month:

Spirit Store, Dundalk on November 18th

Academy 2, Dublin on November 19th *Official launch of 'Sidney Maxwell Williamson' EP

Fear The Foliage: EP Launchington at Twisted Pepper

Dublin band Fear The Foliage launched their first release last night to a busy Twisted Pepper. Given that it has taken this band all of four years to release material to you and I, there was a sense of triumph in the air. Well I certainly felt it anyway..I’m 6 foot 5; my senses are shark like.

Support on the night came from How Will They Cope and Romanov’s Goodbye.

How Will They Cope?: My favourite Dublin band. There I said it. Absolutely nothing to do with their live performances though. Respect for this 4 piece aside, they can be awful live. But there’s something about a hit and miss live band that intrigues me. It makes you come back again and again, not knowing at all what to expect. A 4 piece that ‘play more shows than they practice’, last night they were FANTASTIC. Deserved of capital letters. Jaw dropping ambient electro-rock that should be displayed on a much larger stage. Their first EP is available at their live shows but is also streaming on their website. YOU WILL LIKE THIS BAND. www.myspace.com/howwilltheycope

Romanov’s Goodbye: Talented, energetic multi-instrumentalists with in your face pounding drums and Enter Shikari-esque synths. Which was not what I was expecting. I’d been told they were going to sound like Joy Division. A modern band that sounds like Joy Division??? GET OUT!! That’s too crazy for me. Well it was a great set essentially. My one complaint is that this band take themselves far too seriously. It’s Twisted Pepper guys, ok. Nevertheless, a great live act that are visibly going places. www.myspace.com/romanovsgoodbye

Fear The Foliage: Well it’s about bloody time they released something. The EP is looking (jewel album case, great artwork) and sounding mighty impressive by the way. As for the live performance well I can’t put in a bad word about it. Tight…so tight; often note-perfect at times. FTF wowed the now packed Twisted Pepper audience. It would be rude to declare their cover of ‘Rapper’s Delight’ as the highlight of their set but man that was good. Truthfully, there was no highlight and I don’t mean that in a bad way at all. Each song sounded genuinely different. With chorus chants such as ‘HEY, HO’ , the vocals stood out throughout the set, as did the drumming. Each song boasted remarkable and advanced songwriting. I’m going to see this band live again. You should too. www.myspace.com/fearthefoliage

Fear The Foliage’s debut EP ‘Saviour’ is available now directly from the band.
Oh if only they had a better name…
